Sleep Apnea & Snoring Treatment in Camas, WA

At Camas Dentistry, Dr. Woyciehowsky and our team take great pride in approaching each patient’s visit at our office with a whole-body systemic approach. This approach includes screening all patients for oral sleep obstruction. It is estimated that there are over one billion people worldwide with untreated obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).

It’s a pandemic, and Camas Dentistry wants all our patients to be healthy and safe. We see people working with heavy machinery in construction or simply operating a car—all our patients and their OSA affect their families and the people and animals around them.

Sleep Apnea's Effects on Your Daily Life

Your health isn’t the only thing that suffers if you have sleep apnea. A lack of restful sleep also wreaks havoc on your day-to-day life:

  • Headaches upon waking or throughout the day without caffeine
  • Excessive daytime sleepiness
  • Irritability or depression
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Drowsy-driving accidents
  • Forgetfulness or memory problems

Your Sleep Apnea Evaluation Starts with Eccovision® Technology

Eccovision® technology is the first step in detecting potential obstructive sleep apnea. We can then move you toward a proper diagnosis and definitive treatment plan. Below, we share the steps to diagnosis and possible treatment options.

Step 1: Sleep Apnea Screening

Eccovision Acoustic Diagnostic Pharyngometer and Rhinometer technology allow your dentist to evaluate your anatomical airway integrity for sleep apnea. It also influences treatment options such as appliance therapy.

Step 2: Sleep Apnea Diagnosis

Dr. Woyciehowsky works closely with local and remote sleep-focused physicians, who are the only ones who can diagnose obstructive sleep apnea. Once the sleep physician solidifies the diagnosis, Dr. Woyciehowsky will explore potential treatment options to ensure a safe and comfortable good night's sleep from now on.

Step 3: Sleep Apnea Treatment

Sleep apnea treatment may include the cumbersome CPAP machine or gentler options like appliance therapy. Using Eccovision technology, your dentist can often create a comfortable appliance through SomnoMed to treat your apnea.

Frequently Asked Questions

We Are In Network with Your Medical Insurance!

We understand concerns about cost may impact your decision to seek sleep apnea treatment. We are in network with several medical insurance carriers and will do everything we can to maximize your benefits so you can get the critical care you need.

A few of the insurance carriers that we are contracted with include: Aetna, BlueCross Federal, Cigna, Humana, Premera, TriCare, and United Healthcare.

Is your carrier not listed or do you want to verify what your out-of-pocket cost will be for oral sleep therapy? Please reach out! As a courtesy, we're happy to contact your insurance carrier to verify your policy details to determine if your sleep apnea appliance is a covered benefit. We will also verify if your insurance carrier requires documentation that other treatments were ineffective before approving coverage. We will also assist you by working with your physician and carrier to ensure the correct documentation is received to process your claims.

Since sleep apnea is a medical condition that can lead to serious health issues like high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke, many insurers categorize its treatment as medically necessary. As a result, appliances and devices designed to treat sleep apnea by keeping the airway open during sleep often qualify for coverage under medical, not dental, insurance. Of course, it is important to note that coverage can vary among different insurers and plans.

Common Sleep Apnea Appliances

Among the most popular and effective devices and appliances for treating sleep apnea are:

  • Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) machines Keep the airways open by delivering a constant stream of air through a mask worn during sleep.
  • Mandibular Advancement Devices (MAD)—This is the most common oral appliance for treating sleep apnea. It gently moves the lower jaw forward during sleep to keep the airway open.
  • Tongue Retaining Devices (TRD) — Hold the tongue in a forward position, preventing it from collapsing back into the throat and blocking the airway.
  • Hybrid oral appliances — Devices combining the functions of MADs and TRDs adjust both the jaw and the tongue to optimize airflow and prevent obstructions.

Some policies include out-of-pocket costs such as deductibles or co-pays. Check with your insurance provider to understand your specific coverage options and any necessary pre-approvals.

We Make It Convenient to Work with a Physician

The first step is working with a medical doctor who will order a home sleep study for you, as they are the only healthcare professionals who can diagnose obstructive sleep apnea. At Camas Dentistry, Dr. Woyciehowsky works with local and remote sleep-focused physicians and can put you in touch with these professionals.

With home sleep tests, there is no need to schedule a sleep test in a sterile, cold facility that makes it difficult to sleep. You can complete the study in the comfort and privacy of your own home! We send you home with a small piece of equipment, and follow the instructions to complete the test. You then bring the equipment back to us to upload to the tele-med physician, who will schedule an appointment to review the results with you and evaluate your symptoms.

Once the study is completed and reviewed by the physician or medical doctor, you may be referred to Dr. Woyciehowsky for a mouthpiece called an oral sleep appliance to address your sleep apnea. He uses leading-edge sonar technology to measure your airway and customize your mouthpiece to ensure it fits comfortably. This will allow him to find the best position and fit for your mouthpiece.

Effective Sleep Apnea Treatment in Camas, WA

A continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine is the standard treatment approach for those with moderate to severe sleep apnea. The machine delivers a steady stream of pressurized air, keeping your airway open throughout the night.

While CPAP is highly effective, some people struggle with the treatment because the mask is bulky to wear or the machine is too noisy. So, they put it in the closet, allowing sleep apnea symptoms to persist and threaten their health. In cases where physicians recommend an oral sleep appliance, Dr. Woyciehowsky has you covered!

Oral Sleep Appliance

Dr. Woyciehowsky works with leading oral sleep appliance laboratories in the country, including SomnoMed, the maker of the Herbs AF. One of the most popular brands in the US, SomnoMed's appliances use a soft polymer lining and hinge design for comfort. The Herbst Advance is a good choice for treating OSA, and its patented features ensure its longer lifespan.
